Animals have the key to awakening the love in us

I saw this dog couple of days back. It was tied to a post, obviously its taken care of by someone.

Its a friendly dog and one of its eyes was missing. And yet it looks so happy and enjoying the love of interested passer-by. Life is beautiful indeed when Love is present. – ‘Adnan the Traveller

The Gift of Mindfulness

People want a long life. But look at what they are doing with the time they have now.
A life lived fully in this single moment is more then enough to last for an eternity.

introduction-to-mindfulness

On Mental Sovereignty to develop upon ideas.

We all have our own values, ideas, concepts about life and everything that is in it. All these realisations and insights comes from reflecting on our life experiences, conscious or otherwise. How do we develop on these insights while living in a world that expects a certain level of conformity ideas and expectations.

a1

This is what I have been grappling with. First and foremost, it is inevitable that in life, as we live in a society, that is a certain need to adhere to set rules and ideas. The norms of our society also plays a part. We can rightly say that society as a whole (including work itself) could not function effectively if everyone could not find common alignment to do things in a commonly agreed manner.

The question of course is how, as a conscious and philosophical human, do we develop our own ideas and insights when we do not have the space to practice and deepen them. Do we get stuck in only the beginning stage of our insights? Every insights requires a certain level of processing and most importantly, practice, in order to find the veracity of it and if not, possible need to fine tune such ideas. Without the time and space to deepen these, the human being is stuck at the moment of insight and at the most, only inch slowly based on the limited time it has to ponder such things.

As we live our lives, its admittedly harder to do these. We fill many roles; in the professional, family and personal setting. Also our interpersonal setting with friends, families, significant other. All these relationships also imposes a certain level of expectations upon us and are sometimes the dynamics are so established that it becomes harder to move and shift these expectations.

a2

My conclusion is for now to practice it in every way you can. If you can’t practice it with action, practice it only with your heart and intention. Transmute every action you do with the intention of the realisation that you are holding on to. So for example, if you are developing on the idea that there is no such thing as time because everything is now, then even if you are rushing towards a professional deadline set by others, you can still do your best work and do it as quickly, recognising the fact that there is a deadline to meet, but at the same time internally, hold the centered space that yes although you are moving quickly, you are at the same time centered in the realisation that there is only Now. Sometimes holding the space for these paradox itself has its own value in any spiritual practice. By holding the space for two polarities and existing in these space, it will also open up a new space for you to explore. The space in between Now and linear time.

With relationships such as family, children, significant other, then its about setting the space for such interaction with your love ones. I would assume that our significant others would be the people which we would have the greatest ability to influence in mutually agreeing with concepts and ideas and the need for sovereignty over our own notions. Its not easy I admit but its still possible, compared to for example our parents who sometimes has carved a certain fixed way of thinking over lifetimes especially in terms of how they relate to you. Sometimes the lesson in relating to our parents is simply in terms of honouring them as they are and accepting some bitterness when it comes to remnants of how they perceived us. But that is just a story as well and we can choose to unify that story.

While I do not have the answer, I only have the abovementioned suggestions. Whether spiritual or not, the ability to hold on to our own ideas and insights and having the space to develop on them in our own time and space is something that we all grapple with. In fact I do believe that its a perennial issue. Imagine our primordial caveman ancestors, choosing to go off away from the campfire at night for some quality alone time away from the tribe. Of course, being the wild, he would have to have some really serious thinking to do to risk predation to go off thinking alone somewhere else.

Much love and adieu my friends.

How to convert existing bicycles into an electric bike

With electrical batteries becoming increasingly affordable, we are seeing a proliferation of electrically powered motorised vehicles from drones to skate scooter to bicycles. But what if you are perfectly fine with your bicycles but you don’t mind enjoying the same form factor but with electrical assist? That’s where the Geoorbital wheel comes in;

geoorbital-wheel-in-motion

The GeoOrbital Wheel is an attempt at reinventing the wheel so to speak. It was inspired by the movie Tron and the way the wheels on the light-cycles seemed to work;

Instead of a regular wheel with spokes and a motor powered gear chain moving the wheel, instead we now have a 3 spoke like wheel centre that is also the main motor for the bicycle.

They recently conducted a very successful Kickstarter campaign which shows the interest in their novel rethink of a relatively new technology.

So if a picture speaks a thousand words, then a video speaks a trillion photos. So watch the following videos for a better understanding:

The evolution of the smartphone into a digital voice assistant and ‘friend’

The chase to pursue and lead Artificial Intelligence Capability

We have seen the signs. Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple have been investing in Artificial Intelligence companies who are developing technologies related to machine learning. Google, Amazon and Apple had also developed voice activated search function (Apple – Siri, Amazon – Alexa). Facebook is now investing in Bots that would be integrated in its Messenger so that businesses could communicate directly with customers via messenger.

In Google’s annual Founder’s Letter 2016, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai shared about Google’s investment in the power of machine learning and artificial intelligence. He quoted how ‘…DeepMind’s AlphaGo took on Lee Sedol, a legendary Go master, becoming the first program to beat a professional at the most complex game mankind ever devised.’

deepmind alphago

Deep Mind is a company that Google bought and is at the leading edge of AI Research. And the game GO is a game so complex that it would be impossible to programme all known steps of the game into a computer as it has millions of variations. Instead, the best way to play Go is akin to developing a human like intuition based on repeated play. This video does a better job of explaining to readers how complex the game of GO is and why DeepMind succeeded where other AI’s failed. And the secret is programming its learning ability the way a human mind learns:

And the truth is, DeepMind beat the previous projection on when an AI is estimated to be able to beat a human at GO by a decade.

The future of AI and the Digital Assistant

So with all these being said, we could safely say that many of the leading Tech Companies are investing heavily in AI. In the future, the handphone that we keep looking at would become a smart digital assistant that we could have conversations with. No more visiting websites and thinking which services to take.

This advent is due to the realisation that there is only so much app that people download and use on a daily basis. In fact its being said that most individuals have 3-5 basic apps that they refer to daily. A safe bet would be your facebook/twitter/instagram app, your email app, your instant messaging app, your camera app, your calendar app (5 categories of app). Lets face it, we are all so busy that we dont have time to download the latest app. I used to do it in the past. Test a lot of new apps. But as life gets busier, I only download an app that increases my productivity and that comes recommended by some of my fav tech website such as theverge.com techmeme.com or recommended by Reddit community.

viv-siri-dag-kittlaus

So one of the creators of Siri (apple voice activated assistant) have developed a new kind of digital voice assistant that can do complex tasks that lends credence to a future where all we need to do is talk to an AI to get things done (services, products). The technology is called Viv and this video will help you get up to speed about what VIV can do. Its very fascinating how a lot can be done in the future by just talking to this AI.

This of course reminds me of the movie Her starring Scarlette Johansson as the voice of the AI Samantha that Joaquin Phoenix’s Theodore Twombly fell in love with. If you have not watched this movie yet, I highly recommend it. Here is the trailer:

Its very interesting to see the building blocks of this future slowly developing in our time. It also made me wonder what if in the future the moment that a child is born, they will also be given an AI in the cloud. This AI will be their constant companion in their ear perhaps. A voice that speaks to them. This AI will become their teacher, their best friend, their play companion, their advisor, etc. The intelligent entity that knows them from the day that they were born to the day that we die. How would that feel having an AI as a friend always. This aside, will AI also help with elderly loneliness as they go into their senior year and all their children are too busy with their own family. Its quite an interesting future to imagine. It reminds me of some of Iain M Banks SF books from The Culture Series which was a world build by Iain to describe a post scarcity world where both AI and humans lives side by side.

The-Culture-Novels-by-Iain-M-Banks

There is no doubt in my mind that we are living in the future. But the only question is this future one where technology helps us to fix fundamental problems such as poverty, hunger, violence, education. Whether it liberates us and also makes such technology accessible to the common people. Well if you are alive now, then that means you will be in the front row seats as these technology unfolds. Namaste.

What type of fitness wearable should you get?

There are many types of fitness trackers out there. In the most basic version, the fitness wearables track your fitness by automatically counting the number of steps you walked.

IMG_20160430_215615

Then lately there are companies that came up with a way for them to measure your heart rate by placing an LED light sensor at the back of your wearable. So the question is, with all these developments should you get?

Well I found the following video whereby 4 wearables are tested. 2 of them had heart rate monitors. Watch the video below and learn why a wearable with a hart rate monitor is the best;

Thoughts as an impermanent structure

In our thoughts,  there is no ‘thing’ per say. There is only ‘nothing’. What truly exists is the Now. But the Thought of something can also manifest in the now but its a thought. Not a thing.
The problem arises when we think of thoughts as a thing and later when this ‘thought-thing’ has become so substantiated,  that it becomes seemingly solid to the mind that is thinking it. Only because through repetition,  this thought things becomes a relatively fixed structure within the mind, seemingly fixed as an everyday thing like your house door or house window.
At this point its important to remember you were its creator and u too can be its destroyer. Destroy this ‘thought-thing’ by realising its impermanence and transientness as a flowing thought.
